The History of Tea in Linkou and Taiwan

► Japanese-Ruled Period

In 1894 C.E., the Sino-Japanese war erupted. The Qing government suffered a defeat and yielded Taiwan, Taiwan thus became Japan’s colony. At that time, the Japanese set “Agriculture Taiwan, Industry Japan” as their policy, utilizing Taiwan’s resources proactively. After gradually learning about the topography of Taiwan, the Japanese discovered that Linkou is the best site for planting tea trees.

In the aspect of improving the cultivation and manufacture of tea, government house promoted comprehensive improvement in 1918. This includes encouraging tea framers to better the tea production organization, assign distinguished tea breeds, accelerate the spread of distinguished tea breeds and the renewal of tea gardens. With the effort of both officials and folks, the tea tree cultivation, tea production and improvement had great performance in the Japanese-ruled period.

To enhance the quality of tea production in Taiwan, it was required to educate the framers and traders in the tea industry, and facilitate the modernization of tea industry in Taiwan. Thus, besides encouraging the planting of tea trees, government house also established “Learning Institute of tea” to instruct talents of modern tea technology, and enhance both the quality and the amount of tea produced. Learning institute of tea guided each student to become a talent in planting, manufacturing, and inspecting tea, in order to enhance both the quality and the amount of tea produced. This pushed the development of tea agriculture in Linkou further.
